Violence in Mexico and Fare Increase in Puerto Vallarta

A little over a month has passed since federal forces killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, 'El Mencho', leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), in Tapalpa, Jalisco. Since February 22, the CJNG's violent reaction has caused roadblocks, as well as attacks on businesses and gas stations in at least half of the country's states. One of the hardest-hit areas, along with Guadalajara, was the tourist area of Puerto Vallarta, where, according to the Quadratin agency, dozens of burned and damaged businesses remain along the tourist strip. How many businesses are still damaged in Puerto Vallarta? More than two dozen establishments continue to show severe damage along the tourist strip, mainly convenience stores belonging to chains like Oxxo and Kiosco, which were set on fire during the riots. Quadratin surveyed the tourist corridor, where it was verified that several premises remain boarded up with wood, with damaged structures, and some are even in the process of demolition, while other businesses have been gradually reopening after rehabilitation work. Official figures indicate that during that day, more than 140 commercial establishments in the city were affected, as well as more than 200 vehicles that were also set on fire, causing significant economic and social impact. The persistence of this damage shows that, despite the passing of weeks, the consequences of that incident continue to be present in the urban landscape and commercial activity of the tourist destination. Fare increase in Vallarta effective April 1, 2026, an increase in the public transport fare in Puerto Vallarta will take effect, rising from 10 to 11 pesos for urban service, according to information from the company UNIBUSPV. The fare adjustment was previously approved and will be applied to all users in general, while the student fare will remain at 5 pesos.
